Vehicle tracking using gps

Tracking systems are taking the market by storm. First it was cellular phone tracking; now vehicle tracking is all the rage. The global positioning systems available today allows one to navigate to anywhere in the world to the accuracy of a step! So combine the idea of tracking and finding a location and we have gps tracking systems.

Tracking a vehicle is as easy as putting a chip on it, the driver doesn’t even have to know, and then activate it and the location will appear on the computer screen that has been connected to it. These connections are done via satellites that orbit the earth the space. When a gps device is activated, signals in the form of waves are sent to the satellite, all the coordinates of the vehicle is mapped and sent back to the computer screen in seconds, you can even get a live feed of the car if your gps device is that advanced.

Think of all the possibilities, law enforcement bodies have found this to be great boon as now suspect criminal activities can be tracked, in the two variations of attaching the device one is a magnetic strip that can be put near the engine and the other has to be installed in the vehicle at a time prior to driving, this has been used to monitor many suspects and has also resulted in capturing without the police actually having to tail the suspect and waste fuel, time and energy.

All one has to do is download the particular software required, initially downloads and softwares were expensive but now these are also available to download for free on certain websites so you can pick and choose and fine tune your software to suit your tracking needs. Note also that tracking without permission unless in the case of law enforcement bodies is a crime. It is simply an electronic means of stalking.

Parents who have teenagers new to driving find this tracking system a boon to them, they can now worry a lot less and know the child’s whereabouts at any particular time. Now in addition to tracking something, the gps device does all the usual things like noting your points of interest and giving you coordinates and instructions to any destination in the world.

There are many options to select from when it has to do with tracking devices, you can choose to monitor whatever is being tracked from your cell phone and subscribe accordingly to a package that suits you or use your laptop if you intend to gain more details. All cellular phones these days require the providers to enable the ability of tracking at minimum of 100 meters, before long vehicles will also have to come preinstalled with a tracking device.

GPS Vehicle Tracking Can Tell You How You Drive

Anyone out there who loves gadgets and really wants to know about their own driving style should install a GPS vehicle tracking device in to their car or truck. By doing this you will be able to collect data on what you really do when you are driving around.

The GPS tracker system will record your every move as you navigate the streets and accelerate, slow down or brake. Your speed, direction of travel and even altitude as you drive up and down hills can be stored for later analysis.

You may also have the benefit of a reduced insurance premium if you install a tracking device in your vehicle, but check with your insurance company first as they may require you to install a particular make or standard of device or system.

Another benefit will be available to you when it comes around to that wonderful time of the year when you have to do your tax returns. Your GPS device will record the exact mileage that you have covered so that you never have to take down readings from the odometer ever again.

Using the web based interface supplied with the system, which you will be able to access over the internet via your personal computer or laptop, you will be able to see all the data that has been recorded for all the journeys that you made with the GPS tracking device installed in the vehicle and switched on.

You will also get detailed reports that analyze the recorded data and display summary information in a format which is easy to understand and which will show you exactly how you have driven the vehicle.

Your particular driving style will be there in black and white for you to study. You might be quite surprised at what you find. You may think you never break the speed limit but the results might just prove otherwise.

Everything you do when driving will be documented in detail including instances of hard braking and extreme acceleration which might suggest to you that you are not such a smooth driver as you might have thought. You will also get to find out your maximum speeds and average speed figures for different journeys.

Whether all this makes a difference to your driving style after seeing the results will depend on you alone, but hopefully if you are doing things that you think you shouldn’t be then it will an eye opener that could trigger you into taking action.

Whatever happens and whatever results you see in the reports you will become more aware of your own driving and this is definitely a good thing for us al. Also if your driving is somewhat on the bad side then there is at least some hope that you might slow down which can’t be a bad thing.

The web based monitoring means you will be able to access your reports whenever you want and wherever you happen to be so long as you have a connection to the internet from a computer.

A GPS vehicle tracking system can therefore have many additional benefits other than the vehicle location and tracking functionality for which it was originally designed.

As a bonus you can also lower your insurance premiums and get to see how good a driver you really are.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Auto Navigation Systems and GPS

Auto navigation systems and GPS devices are everywhere you turn in this day and age. You can find them in your car, boat, plane, even in your purse (if you have a PDA or cell phone with GPS capabilities combined with the right software and/or subscriptions). If that isn’t enough for you, you also have the option and capability of turning your laptop computer into a GPS device if that is your desire. The thing that most people forget to check out or ask about when looking at all the nifty features of unit A over unit B is how easy is the unit you are considering to use?

Handheld GPS and auto navigation systems offer sensible solutions to common travel related problems. They will not have all the answers all the time but are a great help most of the time. There are many styles and types of GPS and auto navigation systems that are available in today’s market. Some people may not fully understand all of the neat tricks you can do with your GPS system. Here are a few things you may not have realized you can do with your GPS device.

1) You can always find the spot where you parked your car by marking it. Talk about a treasure hunt where “X” marks the spot!
2) You can track your route while hiking, biking, or horseback riding so that you can retrace your steps in order to find your way back where you started.
3) Some GPS devices can even allow you to ‘go it alone’ by offering the option of a digital compass rather than telling you step by step where to go (if this interests you, check the package details to see if this is available on the unit you are considering).

Keep in mind however that GPS and auto navigation systems aren’t fail safe. There are a few problems that the brochures, boxes, and salesmen might neglect to mention.

1) You still need to carry around an Atlas or road maps for backups as there are occasions when the data for GPS units may not be current or accurate. Remember that roads are built, close, and in need of repair and maintenance all the time. It’s nearly impossible to have one that is always correct up the minute.

2) These devices do not typically work well inside buildings or under dense forest cover.

3) Batteries, batteries, batteries. These are worse than digital cameras when it comes to burning through batteries. This is one reason that people tend to leave them charging at all times if you’re leaving your car with your unit be sure you have extra batteries for backup as it is quite likely that you will need them at the worst possible moment.

4) GPS units do not recognize the existence of mountains, rivers, and other obstructions in your path so the directions and coordinates they give can occasionally be misleading.

There are many pros and cons when it comes to not only auto navigation devices but also for handheld GPS devices as well. Be sure that you try out the model you are considering before you buy it if at all possible. This will make your decision much easier and allow you to see whether or not you will be able to easily use and understand the auto navigation system you choose.
