GPS Vehicle Tracking System: Tracking Vehicle Electronically

In this tech-savvy world, now everything is within the human reach, from landing on the planets to tracking the vehicle movements. Isn’t strange? Yes it is, but it is a crucial fact. Vehicle tracking is an effective solution which helps in tracking and monitoring the movement of passenger and commercial vehicles. With the advent of GPS (global Positioning System) technology, it is now possible to track the movement of commercialized and private vehicles within stipulated time period.

How Vehicle Tracking is done?

With the installation of GPS (global positioning System) device, it is very easy to detect the exact position of any vehicle. GPS is a satellite based navigation system which constantly monitors the significant information such as vehicle’s location in terms of latitude and longitude, its speed, distance travelled and time duration of each halt. Previously, GPS systems were used to cater the need of people in telling the directions through electronic devices, but nowadays, it is used in the vehicles also. The only difference is that this GPS vehicle tracking device can be installed in the vehicle without bringing it into the knowledge of driver.

Usage

GPS vehicle tracking system is largely used by those business people who own multiple vehicles and engaged in fleet industry. It is an invaluable tool for business that helps in optimizing fuel costs and cutting down many operational expenses. With this tracking system, it is easy to keep a close check not only on the vehicle but also on the staff member’s working methods and thus, directly helps in increasing efficiency and overall productivity of the business.

Even for rental car companies and trucking companies, it is of great advantage. This GPS device helps in preventing thefts apart from increasing efficiency of employees. Moreover, some insurance companies also give attractive discounts to those proud owners, who are having GPS tracking system installed in their private or passenger vehicles.

Nowadays, not only public vehicle owners but also private vehicle owners using GPS vehicle tracking system to ensure safety and security while travelling. Therefore, it is not wrong to say that vehicle tracking system is one of the most effective and lucrative gift to vehicle industry by the rapid developing technology. Now it totally depends upon an individual how to encash it.

Gps: the Technology Behind Vehicle Tracking

Technology is a wonderful thing and has enabled us as a race to achieve things we could have only ever dreamed of, and using manmade and developed technologies we have managed to reach the deepest parts of the oceans and climb far into outer space in order to satisfy our curiosity and develop methods that improve our lives. In fact it is the development of complex satellites and space craft that enable us to utilise what has become one of the most popular and relied upon technological inventions, the GPS tracking system.

GPS tracking systems or vehicle tracking systems as they are otherwise known are now used by thousands of companies and private individuals for a variety of different reasons. Fleet managers, for example, use GPS systems to help them run their vehicle fleets more efficiently and to help them remain compliant with Government laws and legislation, such as the Corporate Manslaughter Act and the Working Time Directive.

For private individuals vehicle tracking devices can help guide them on long journeys and improve the security of their vehicle. GPS tracking systems have also been utilised to track other objects, for instance, in some conservation projects rare species are fitted with a tracking device and then monitored allowing conservationists to learn more and to help that species survive in this volatile world. But what exactly is GPS, how was it developed, and more significantly what role does GPS play in modern day life?

First and foremost, GPS stands for Global Positioning System and refers to a satellite-based navigation system made up of a network of 24 satellites. Originally developed for military use by the United States, the early 1980’s saw the system being opened up for civilian use. Unaffected by weather conditions and fully operational 24 hours a day anywhere in the world, GPS is extremely accurate, so much so that any object being tracked by the system can be monitored in real time to the very second.

In order to maintain this level of accuracy GPS satellites transmit a signal from space to GPS receivers here on earth. Using this signal and a process called triangulation; GPS receivers can calculate the user’s exact location. They do this by comparing the time a signal was transmitted to the time in which it was received, by calculating this time difference receivers can work out how far away a satellite is thus determining, using distance measurements from other GPS satellites, where the user is positioned.

Limitations, however, occur when a receiver can only see one or two satellites as GPS receivers rely on more than one satellite to help them triangulate a user’s position. In essence then, GPS technology needs a receiver to be able to see at least three GPS satellites to track movement using latitude and longitude calculations. However, the network is now so advanced that this very rarely occurs. Once a receiver has found a user’s position other calculations can be made, and it is these calculations that have helped thousands of companies save time and money through effective vehicle tracking techniques.

GPS tracking technology is capable of calculating speed, distance travelled, distance to travel, and can even be used to calculate fuel consumption and the style in which a vehicle has been and is being driven. These accurate calculations are even more necessary in today’s current climate with fuel prices at an all time high and increased environmental awareness is necessitating a need for ultra efficient vehicles, especially with commercial vehicles that are in operation as part of a fleet.

When it comes to GPS and vehicle tracking systems then, there is much more than meets the eye but developers and providers of this specialist technology continue to extend the already long list of benefits that can be achieved by using GPS tracking. With many creating bespoke real time software and web based tracking packages, UK companies are embracing satellite technology to help improve efficiency, keep their employees safe and save money, thus in circumstances such as this our ‘Big Brother’ culture is proving highly lucrative and rewarding.

Garmin has a somewhat confusing product line, which is somewhat alleviated by a reasonably good online guide on the manufacturer's web site (you select the features you are looking for, and it narrows down the choices to fewer and fewer models until you find what you are looking for);

I was specifically looking for a model with both North America and Europe maps, capable of supporting multiple languages for speech synthesis (so that my non-English speaking parents could use it as well), traffic information, lane assist, and pretty good UI.

I had narrowed my choices down to the Garmin nüvi 775T and the Tomtom 930T, but eventually went for the Garmin for a couple of reasons. For one thing, I am a little biased, having used their aviation panel mounted models for a few years and I knew that Garmin makes excellent units. I was also impressed by their customer support: they replied to a couple of questions I had about their products pretty quickly, even though I hadn't bought the 775T yet.

This is a feature rich device; I haven't had time to play with all its functions yet; it is able to get a satellite fix even in non optimal situations (such as tree coverage, tall building, even indoors if a window is nearby); the routes it picks look quite reasonable (by the way: do not try to make it compute 'silly' routes, such as asking it to compute a driving route from some place in California to some place in Europe... the unit will get stuck and might require a hard reset). The user interface is very intuitive IMHO and presents the information in a very concise and effective manner (important while driving!)

So overall, I am very satisfied with this purchase, especially at the price that was offered on Amazon (significantly cheaper than what I had found elsewhere).

A couple of things in no particular order:

The safety lock feature is neat (you can protect the unit with a PIN, and if you dial the PIN wrong too many times, the unit can only be unlocked by returning to a 'safe location.' Sounds neat, until you realize that it is easy to misdial the PIN (until you get used to the touch screen I suppose), which might be a snag if you do that many miles away from said 'safe location', for instance, when on vacation. I disabled that feature as a result.

The manufacturer's web site was not specific enough IMHO about which voices were provided 'out of the box' for the speech synthesis function (where it speaks the instructions and street names); it turns out that the nice customer service representative answered that question promptly. Note that not all the voices / languages provided can speak the street names (e.g., the various English, French, Spanish, etc. voices can, but the one Arabic voice cannot)

If you choose a voice of a different language than the locale, its pronunciation of the street names can be a bit puzzling at times :-) it does however a remarkably good job most of the times (I went out of my way to try to confuse it :-) ).

Finally, don't forget to download your one free map update (you'll have to choose between either the North America or European map for this free update), and the free firmware updates. There are also pretty neat applications available (which combined with some Google Maps features, e.g., possibility to overlay the contents of GPX files that the unit can export onto Google Maps, increase the possibilities.)

Some of the reviews here are not quite accurate. The 775t model powers up in 20 seconds, then you have to hit agree or wait 10 more seconds for the "Warning", after that you are ready to "where to?". I have to enter 3 of the first letters of my 9 letter city, then it comes up, enter address and directions and map displays up in 1 second. The unit will auto power on when
it is connected to supplied car charger. When you turn the car ignition off, the 775t gives you a choice of leaving the power on or off.
The voice on my unit is load and clear, I happen to like the downloaded voice of Team Garmin's Matt White.

The "Where To?"-Points of Interest is a great feature. Need to find the closest gas station? Hit Fuel- Names and addresses pop up, click on the business and phone number shows up. No more digging for the phone book. The GPS
has icons for gas, food, fuel, transit, lodging, and even shopping, banks, and hospitals.

Suggestions for new owners: This unit does not come with a case. This unit charges the GPS battery attached to your computer with supplied USB cable. Unit works fine inside your home-gives you indoor playing time. Go to Garmin site for free upgrade and download extra voices, and vechicle icons. Be prepared to spend a couple of hours at the Garmin site.

I look foward to using and playing with my new GPS 775t. This GPS is easy to use. I just wish it came supplied with the lastest maps, and all the voice and icons already on the unit, and the case.

Garmin nüvi 775T 4.3-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator

Simple, reliable, and fully featured. There is not much this GPS device can't do. I am travelling to Europe this summer so I wanted a device that has both US and European maps. The thing I struggled the most with was the 'Tom Tom vs Garmin' decision. Both have some unique features but in the end the various online reviews about the Garmin being easier to use, and the NAVTEQ maps being more accurate in the US, combined with the 'free for life' traffic updates convinced me that this was the unit for me. And I have not been disapointed. The display is easy to read, even in sunlight, operation could not be simpler, and it works very well. That said I like to play with the configuration of my 'toys' but the Garmin really does not have many things to play with. The two things I am not as keen about are 1) To view traffic there is a traffic display mode' in which the normal GPS display goes into a grey mode so it's easy to see the traffic, but to see the normal screen colors again you have to turn traffic off. Makes it easy to see the traffic, but you lose the other detil (parks being green etc). 2) It has a very fancy auto zoom that will zoom in as you approach a junction etc. It's not very configurable and sometims does not remember the zoom level that I set. But all in all a great device.

Vehicle Tracking Systems

GPS or (Global Positioning System) is a satellite based navigational technology or automobile tracking system, which allows firms with large fleets of vehicles, spread across a huge territory, to have a constant whereabouts regarding their vehicles.

GPS fleet tracking system has huge advantage over cellular communications between the fleet drivers and a transportation firm. The connection between GPS satellites and GPS fleet tracking receivers remains intact even in the presence of skyscrapers, high disturbance or high interference.

Several companies select GPS fleet tracking for its other benefit that is the system enables them to regulate an employee tracking system based on time cards and driver-written mileage records. This automobile tracking system also allows the firm to enter each vehicle’s travel summary straightaway into a computer.

GPS fleet tracking system allows determining the time that each of the driver takes, through which the firm may decide to take the necessary steps to work on drivers’ performance and service.

GPS Vehicle Tracking System:

The most crucial aspect of GPS vehicle tracking system is the panic button, which people can use in any emergency. The emergency may be anything for example an accident or a carjacking, regardless of reason when this button is pressed an operator at the nearest GPS carrier will instantly start to listen the entire incidence.

If the situation is safe, and there is no need to panic, the operator will talk with the individual to assess to normalize the situation. Further, if the vehicle completely breaks down leaving the driver stranded in a strange and odious place, the GPS vehicle tracking system may work as a boon in such a situation.

For numerous parents this device or system might offer a peace of mind, as the system provides them the facility to call and confirm the exact location of their vehicles, if a kid or minor droves the vehicle without their consent.

Finally, the most obvious purpose to have a GPS vehicle tracking system is in a condition, where someone steals the vehicle. At such time, the victims just need to inform their GPS carriers the entire scenario. They will quickly trace the vehicle’s location, its racing speed, and will eventually inform the police to complete the recovery formalities for their users.
